Understanding Taoism

A faith, a philosophy,
and a way of living.

A useful distinction

Related roots,
different forms.

DAOIST PHILOSOPHY

A philosophical tradition

Daoist philosophy is commonly associated with texts such as the Tao Te Ching and Zhuangzi. It explores the Dao, naturalness, non-coercive action, freedom of spirit and the limits of fixed distinctions.

TAOIST RELIGION

A living religious tradition

Taoism developed as an organised religious tradition with scriptures, lineages, precepts, temples, clergy, ritual, festivals, cultivation and community life. It draws upon early Chinese thought while possessing its own religious history and institutions.

Core ideas

Four ideas
that shape the Way.

These ideas are not isolated slogans. Together they describe how Taoism understands existence, conduct and the relationship between human life and the wider world.

01

Dao and Virtue

道与德

The Dao is the origin and underlying order of all life. Virtue is the Dao expressed through character, conduct and responsibility.

02

Naturalness

Naturalness means respecting the character, timing and limits of things rather than forcing them into excess.

03

Clarity and non-coercive action

Through clarity and disciplined restraint, action becomes more measured, timely and free from needless contention.

04

Harmony of heaven, earth and humanity

Human wellbeing is inseparable from community and nature. Inner balance extends towards social harmony and ecological responsibility.

A living tradition

Belief, practice
and community life.

Taoism is more than philosophy or wellbeing. Its religious and cultural life is carried through six connected areas.

01

Faith and scripture

Reverence for the Dao, together with sacred beings, scriptures and commentarial traditions, frames the moral relationship between heaven, earth and humanity.

02

Cultivation and ethics

Character, stillness, breath, movement and ethical discipline form a gradual practice of self-cultivation.

03

Ritual and festivals

Ceremony gives communal form to reverence, gratitude, remembrance, blessing and responsibility.

04

Temples and lineages

Temples, clergy and lineages sustain teaching, ritual order, sacred space and the continuity of living communities.

05

Music, calligraphy and art

Music, painting, calligraphy, architecture, sculpture, vestments and ritual objects carry meaning as well as beauty.

06

Service and contemporary life

Compassionate service, ecological responsibility and cross-cultural dialogue bring Taoist values into public life.

Taoism in Aotearoa

Rooted in tradition,
expressed for today.

Rooting Taoism in New Zealand does not mean reducing it to lifestyle language, nor importing every historical custom without context. It requires careful translation, qualified guidance and respect for both Taoist tradition and New Zealand society.

The Council therefore places emphasis on bilingual education, responsible ritual practice, cultural and academic exchange, ecological awareness, community service and dialogue across cultures and faiths.
